Mindworx Academy Head Sabelo Myeni scoops the 2018 Standard Bank Rising Star Award

Sabelo Myeni (33) Head of Mindworx Academy has been awarded the 2018 Standard Bank Rising Star Award – Professional Services category,  for his work in developing inexperienced graduates into poised and appropriately skilled professionals who are capable of performing entry-level jobs and in so doing gaining a foot into the formal sector of the South African economy.This accolade was presented to Myeni at a glitzy event held at the Hilton Hotel in Johannesburg last Thursday where he shared the stage with other pioneers in the 28-40 year age bracket,  who continuously demonstrate excellence in their chosen paths. Myeni attributes this achievement to his never die vision to build the next generation of digital talent for improved organisational performance and individual excellence and this is because he believes that equipping young people with digital skills equips them with new critical skills required for the 21st century workplace.

My journey with the tech space started when I was still a student at the University of Swaziland where I was awarded the Great Idea Award for developing a geography society website for the University’s Peer, Educator and Counsellor initiative and this is where my eyes were opened to the multiple opportunities that digital presents to solve some of South Africa’s most burning issues,’ enthuses Myeni.Self-proclaimed education enthusiast with an aptitude for connecting with students and motivating and inspiring them to harness their potential Myeni has held various positions ranging from academically-focused to admin and this is where he gained the valuable experience equipping him with the know-how needed to meet the challenges of his current position as Head at Mindworx Academy.

The Standard Bank Rising Star Award are designed to publicly recognise trailblazers who have and nurture the qualities needed to walk the talk to help themselves and others rise to the top of their game. The final year MBA candidate at Regenysses Business School  is a highly dynamic professional who coaches and mentors various SMEs in his spare time. He is also planning to resume his role as a facilitator of the GIBS Spirit of Youth programme next year.

Being a part and ultimately winning the 2018 Standard Bank Rising Star Award affirms what I have known for the longest of time and that is the fact that the combination of digital technology and human creativity will revolutionize the South African economy by giving youth an equal footing in the workplace and in so doing overcoming isolation, speeding up change, and taking success to scale, ’ concludes Myeni.

The overall purpose of this assessment is to identify and publicly recognise ‘Rising Stars’ as having the qualities needed to join a guiding coalition of other Rising Stars able and willing to walk the talk to help themselves and others rise to the top of their game. Our Rising Star Network will be formed from the top 5 finalists in each of the 12 business sectors – making a network of approximately 150 (over the last 3 years) of the most talented young people in the country.
